The Curriculum

At Stonehill we believe that we provide a balanced curriculum by ensuring that the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and ICT are given emphasis in the timetable whilst foundation subjects are given at least the National Curriculum recommended time.  A list of the subjects taught in school is as follows:

Art

Citizenship & RE

(CARE)

Design Technology

English

French

Geography

History

Maths

Music

Physical Education

Science

Stonehill also offers extra subjects that help broaden, enrich and enlighten your child’s education.  These include Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), Spanish and extra curricular activities.

Religious Education

Parents may contact the school if they wish to discuss the Religious Education curriculum.  The course follows the Local Authority agreed multi-faith syllabus.  Parents have a right to withdraw their child from religious education.  In such cases alternative work will be provided for these pupils.

Sex Education

Sex education at Stonehill follows DCFS guidelines.  The school has a Sex Education policy, which is available on request.

Parents retain the right to withdraw their child from all or part of sex education, except that which is included in the Science National Curriculum.  This no longer includes teaching on HIV/AIDS or aspects of human sexual behaviour other than the biological.

Homework and Pupil Planners

Homework is set on a regular basis in each subject.  The type and amount will vary by subject and age.  A rough guideline is 20-30 minutes per subject per week in Year 7, to 40-50 minutes in Year 9.  Each pupil records the details of the homework and when it has been completed in their pupil planner.  Parents are urged to ensure that homework is done under appropriate conditions.  If parents feel that either too much or too little homework is being given, they should contact the school.  Pupil planners are checked weekly by form tutors.  Parents are asked to sign planners weekly and may add comments if they wish.

Out of School Activities

The governors and staff of Stonehill value the educational opportunities afforded by extra curricular, out of school activities and residential experiences.  We encourage all pupils to participate in such events.  Activities are advertised by letter.  No school trip can make a profit, and any surplus is refunded.

Residential trips have included visits to Paris/Poitiers, Austria, Strasbourg and Aberglaslyn.  Also we have outings and the whole school activities days.
